The question of whether efficient transit or advanced technology underpins international business is the topic of discussion. I tend to side with the latter because, even though affordable shipping can unlock a certain type of international trade, that type of trade can be destructive while technology brings the benefits of international business to more people.

译文：高效交通与先进技术究竟哪一项是国际贸易的根基，这一问题引发了讨论。我更认同后者。尽管低廉的货运能够开拓部分国际贸易形式，但这类贸易存在弊端，而技术能让更多人共享国际贸易带来的红利。

Firstly, those who believe that international business needs cheap delivery might focus on how it makes offshoring possible. This is because, when a country’s standard of living increases, the wages of workers cut deeper into the business owners’ profits, causing the owners to look for cost-cutting measures. And when the price of international shipping drops to a certain point, the business can afford the transportation while taking advantage of the significantly cheaper labor from other parts of the world. In other words, if international shipping were not cheap, wealthier countries would have no incentive to do business with factories or workers in nations with lower wages.

译文：首先，认为国际贸易离不开低价运输的人，往往会强调交通成本低廉让产业外包得以实现。随着一个国家生活水平提升，人力成本会不断挤压企业主的利润，促使经营者寻求降本方案。当国际运费降至一定水平，企业便能承担运输开销，同时利用其他地区低廉的劳动力。换言之，倘若国际运输成本居高不下，富裕国家就不会有动力去和低薪资国家的工厂及劳工开展合作。

However, others believe better technology is the true keystone of successful business on the global stage because offshoring leads to a vicious cycle of wage suppression. When exporting countries’ only comparative advantage is their cheap labor, they are motivated to push their workers’ salaries as low as possible in order to offer the most favorable contracts to wealthier countries trying to offshore their manufacturing. At the end of the day, workers in developed nations lose their jobs, and their counterparts in developing nations must work under the least favorable conditions possible.

译文：但也有人认为，先进技术才是全球商业发展真正的核心支柱，因为产业外包会造成薪资被压低的恶性循环。如果出口国唯一的比较优势就是廉价劳动力，它们就会刻意压低工人薪资，以此向寻求产业外迁的富裕国家提供最优合作条件。最终，发达国家的劳工失去工作，而发展中国家的同行则被迫在极差的环境下劳作。

Overall, despite the opportunities created by inexpensive transportation, I believe the case for prioritizing technology for international business is stronger because it leads to globalization that benefits a larger number of people. By focusing on technologicalinnovation, countries abandon the mindset of fighting against their own workers to suppress their wages. Instead, workers would be put into positions where their creativity and innovation are valued above all else. If successful, workers would create the automated technologies that replace mundane manufacturing. Consequently, workers move up the value chain, leaving the factory floor for research labs and design studios, to sell their significantly more valuable products and services to customers from around the world.

译文：总体来看，即便低成本运输创造了不少机遇，我依旧认为国际贸易应当优先发展技术，因为这样才能打造惠及更多人的全球化模式。深耕技术创新，各国便不会再靠压低本国劳工薪资来谋求发展。取而代之的是，劳动者的创造力与创新能力会得到最大重视。一旦取得成果，人们研发出的自动化技术将取代低端重复性生产。劳动者得以向产业链上游攀升，从车间走向实验室与设计工作室，向全球客户输出附加值更高的产品与服务。

In summary, despite the utility offered by economical cargo ships, I generally believe that truly successful and sustainable international business must be built by pushing technology forward.
